Private James McAvoy

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present.

James McAvoy was called-up and posted to, or enlisted in, the North Irish Horse between May and July 1917 (No.2542 – later Corps of Hussars No.71887).

After training at the reserve camp at Antrim he embarked for France in late 1917 or early 1918. There he was posted to the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This unit, however, was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit in February-March 1918, meaning a 25 per cent reduction in its numbers. McAvoy was attached to the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers), remaining with that regiment until the end of the war.

On 24 April 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
